Description: herbaceous plants with erect stems. The leaves are leathery and bare, located in the lower part of the stem. They are triangular in shape, elongated and wavy edge. The flowers are purple-white, with bracts that have pronounced dark red veins and spines. The flowers are arranged in a dense inflorescence at the top of the stem.

Interesting fact: Three species of this genus grow in Croatia: long-leaved, soft and spiny.
