Joint pine

Ephedra fragilis subsp. Campylopoda

Description: Bush-shaped, grows lying on the ground or hanging. Branches are articulated and easily breakable at the nodes. The male flowers are small and yellow, collected in inflorescences, and the female ones develop individually. The seed is wrapped in a bright red fleshy sheath. It is common on walls or old houses. When it grows on a wall, its strong roots disrupt the statics of the wall.

Flowering time: January-April

Habitat: Rocks, old walls

Interesting fact: It contains ephedrine, which is a common ingredient in nasal drops. They should be used with caution as they are addictive.  Joint  pine supplements are listed as banned supplements for athletes on the doping list.
